5 Essential Privacy Tips for Your Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices are everywhere—robot vacuums, connected washing machines, smart speakers. They save time and effort, but they also bring a new concern: how safe is your personal data?

The good news is that protecting your privacy doesn’t have to be complicated. With just a few habits and the right choice of products, you can keep your smart home both convenient and secure. Here are five practical tips every household can use.

1. Keep Your Devices Up to Date

Just like your phone or computer, smart appliances rely on regular updates to patch security vulnerabilities. Outdated software is one of the easiest ways for hackers to gain access.

Tip: Always enable automatic updates or check regularly for new firmware and app versions.

Roborock products are tested and certified to meet strict cybersecurity requirements, including timely vulnerability management and secure software updates.

2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Default or weak passwords are open invitations to hackers. Protect your devices by creating strong, unique credentials with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Roborock has obtained the TÜV Rheinland Protected Privacy IoT Service certification, based on the ETSI EN 303 645 global cybersecurity standard. A key rule of this standard is banning universal default passwords, ensuring users set their own secure credentials from the start.

3. Control Permissions — Enable Only What You Need

Granting unnecessary permissions increases the chances of data exposure. A safer practice is to allow access only when it’s truly needed.

Roborock follows this principle by design:

Obstacle Photos: The option is off by default. Only if users enable it in settings will the vacuum capture encrypted photos, stored locally and automatically deleted after the next cleaning.

Video Calls: Two steps are required to activate this feature—switching it on in the app and confirming via a physical button on the device. The real-time video stream is encrypted, transmitted through servers without being stored, and deleted immediately after the call ends.

This “opt-in by choice” approach keeps control in the user’s hands.

4. Understand How Data Is Stored and Transmitted

Not all smart devices treat data the same way. Some upload large amounts of information to the cloud by default, which can increase risks. It’s wiser to choose products that minimize cloud storage and prioritize local processing.

Here’s how Roborock handles it:

Maps: Stored only on the vacuum itself, never uploaded to the cloud.

Photos and Videos: When viewed in the app, files are decrypted and transmitted via the server as a channel—but never stored on it.

AI Training: Recognition models are trained only with data from internal simulated environments, not from customer homes, and all computations run directly on the device.

This approach—local storage first, encrypted transmission only when necessary—significantly reduces the chance of data leaks.

5. Choose Devices with Proven Certifications

With so many options on the market, the simplest way to choose wisely is to look for independent, recognized certifications.

Roborock is the first robot vacuum company to obtain the TÜV Rheinland Protected Privacy IoT Service certification. Based on ETSI EN 303 645, the standard covers 13 critical areas such as secure data transmission, encrypted storage, vulnerability reporting, and consumer-friendly data deletion. This ensures that security and privacy are built into the design from day one.

Building a Safer Smart Home

Privacy and security should never feel like extras—they are essential parts of a connected lifestyle. By updating your devices, using strong passwords, managing permissions, understanding how your data is handled, and choosing products backed by certifications, you can enjoy the benefits of smart living with confidence.

Roborock highly values user privacy and has made it a core design principle. From achieving TÜV Rheinland certification to ensuring that data is encrypted, stored locally, and always under user control, Roborock demonstrates how technology can be both smart and safe.
